Worship: Leading & Preaching Worship-LeadingPreaching


The following is intended to give a brief practical overview of the new Worship: Leading and Preaching pathway.

Practical Information

  • Start date for Connexional pathway is 1st September 2015
  • Units 1 and 2 available September 2015
  • Units 3 and 4 available December 2015
  • Units 5-8 available 1 September 2016
  • Last registration for Faith and Worship is 31 August 2016
  • Faith and Worship must be completed by 31 August 2021
  • The scheme is provided and administered through the Discipleship & Ministries Learning Network


Delivery and content

  • Online delivery, with support for those who do not have appropriate access
  • Group learning sessions (Explore - see below)
  • One course, four models of support
    • Regional Groups
    • Circuit Groups
    • Local Groups
    • 1:1
  • 8 Modules
    • LPs do all 8
    • WL do 1-4
    • Each module:
      • has three sections each of which contains:
        • Worship
        • Prepare
        • Explore (group session)
        • Apply & Reflect (a selection of the tasks undertaken form part of the portfolio submission)
        • Extend (optional - additional ideas to further develop/explore the learning)
      • involves around 60 hours study time (3 x 20 hours) for Prepare, Explore and Apply & Reflect activities, with additional time for Worship and Extend activities
  • Worship Leaders follow the same course for units 1-4 with the option of local amendments
  • LP students should be on-note from module 1, and on-trial before starting module 5 (only when agreed by the LP meeting)



  • LPs and WLs submit a portfolio after unit 4, with differing requirements
  • LPs complete a further portfolio after unit 8
  • Assessment will be recorded as "met" or "not yet met"
  • Marking is by the tutor, appointed by the LP meeting, with regional moderation and Connexional moderation
  • In regional delivery mode, a tutor/marker will be agreed with the region and others involved
  • Marker may be the tutor in the regional delivery mode
  • Mentor has more significant role lasting throughout units 1-4, 5-8, especially in regional delivery mode where there is (potentially) no local tutor



  • Each portfolio consists of evidence from:
    • services led by student - 3-5 (WLs) or 5-7 (LPs)
    • two reflections on acts of worship led by others
    • pieces of work that apply theological understanding in different media contexts - 4 (WLs) or 6 (LPs)
    • overall connecting reflection
  • The portfolio will be assessing:
    • practical skills for leading worship and/or preaching
    • knowledge and understanding, and ability to use in context
    • reflective skills
